The history of the Volkswagen Cabriolet is segmented into a Beetle-based convertible (1949-1980) and a series of Golf-based convertibles (1979-2002) and the more recent T-Roc Cabriolet (2020-present). The Golf Cabriolet, introduced in 1979, became the most successful convertible of its time, known for its practical design, fixed rollover bar, and four full-sized seats, setting the standard for open-top compact cars. Production for the Golf Cabriolet was later moved to the T-Roc SUV platform, resulting in a modern SUV-style convertible.
